I’ll be job hunting in the city for retail jobs like sephora, Macy’s, H&M, victoria’s secret, body shop… and while I know all these stores have typically different starting prices (on long island at VS - 8.00, body shop- 8.50, Macy’s - 8.00/8.50 and H&M- 9.00)

What should my asking hourly wages be? Am I going overboard asking for 10 dollars an hour at Macy’s in the city, or is that average retail pay?
also I have 4 years retail experience and some college.

For example, i bought a $300 item, I put it away and never used it, I find it 6 months later and dont need it. So I go to the store to exhange it for store credit, knowing that i cant get a refund because it has been so long, they tell me they can no longer use the receipt, which says I payed $300, so they scan the item and it says $200 and they tell me they can only give me $200, even though I payed $300. They say its their policy, and I say well I payed $300, not $200, what do you guys think.

This is also a chain retail store, not just a simple mom and pop shop.

Why on earth would anyone go to school for 4 years to flip burgers or make lattes? A friend of mine was offered a job at a large mall in guest services, and they not only wanted a college degree, but a perfect credit score, and a bunch of other strange qualifications. All he was going to be doing was issuing locker keys, strollers, and gift certificates. Does this seem strangely bizarre to anyone else. It’s RETAIL! Some of the most stressful, ungratifying, low-skill employment available. Clue me in here…
